It was, as you can imagine, delightful to see Fred and Wesley together again. And though there was much to discuss about the Whedonverse, when I spoke to Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof on April 28, 2013, it was not for talking †about their previous pairing as the star-crossed Fred and Wesley on Joss Whedonís Buffy spin-off, Angel. It was about something even better. That would be their pairing as the iconic couple, Beatrice and Benedick in Shakespeareís Much Ado About Nothing. Despite the playís Jacobean pedigree, the film on which it is based could easily be construed as being part of the ci-mentioned Whedonverse. Joss Whedon directed it, wrote the music, and filmed it in 12 days in his very own home.†In my opinion, there has never been a better cinematic adaptation of Shakespeare than this one that sets the action in modern times and breathes new life into it while never being unfaithful to the Bardís intentions. And never a better cast, either. There are many familiar faces, including Nathan Fillion as Dogberry in what may be one of that actorís defining comedic roles.

As for Acker and Denisof, they were self-effacing, but very much a mutual admiration society, and palpably delighted to be able to talk about a film they feel so passionately about. From riffing on stage business, to the perils and pleasures of performing a soliloquy while climbing up and down a staircase, they were engaging, witty, and every bit as charismatic in person as in their performances
