Rian Johnson's third film, LOOPER, provokes a lot of questions, most of them philosophical. Ostentiably a sci-fi thriller about time-traveling assassins, it deftly juggles subtexts dealing with existentialism, fate, chance, and the physics of time itself. Heady stuff and so when I talked with the witty and erudite writer/director on September 12, 2012, the obvious place to start was with the illusion of the quick fix. We moved on to the law of unintended consequences, why seeing a good film more than once is all but mandatory, and the delights of writing about time travel.
